This week our students have started the Second Step curriculum. All students at ULPS start their day with a 20-25 minute lesson (Social Emotional Learning Time). The Second Step program teaches students to have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems. Students with these skills are better able to learn in the classroom, develop relationships, and control their emotions and behaviors.
This week the Kindergarten and First Grade students are learning about the importance of listening.
They are learning the Listening Rules: Eyes Watching, Ears Listening, Voices Quiet, and Body Still. These skills help your children know how to listen and act in a group so everyone can learn.
Practice at Home: Before giving directions for daily activities, such as picking up toys or washing hands, remind your child to use the Listening Rules.
For example: You need to use your Listening Rules now. Say each rule and do the actions along with your child, then give the directions: We’re getting ready to leave now, so put on your shoes and coat.
Second grade students are learning how to be respectful at school. Your students are learning many ways to be respectful.
There are many ways to be respectful: Take turns, pay attention, listen to the speaker, raise your hand. We explain to our students when being respectful you treat people how you want to be treated.
.
Practice at home:
Discuss with your child ways he or she showed you or others respect today.
When we practice social emotional skills at school and at home, students have more opportunities to build confidence, manage their emotions, make good choices, and develop the skills they need to become stronger, more successful learners.

Every Day Matters. Every Absence Counts.
At Thomaston-Upson Schools, we know that being in class each day is one of the greatest predictors of student success. Every lesson, every discussion, and every connection with teachers and classmates helps students grow academically and personally.
We understand that appointments and family trips are sometimes necessary. That's why we've created this guide to help families plan ahead and take advantage of our scheduled school breaks whenever possible. By planning vacations during these opportunities, students can enjoy valuable family time while minimizing missed instructional days.
A few missed days each month can quickly add up, making it harder for students to stay on track. Working together, we can help every student make the most of every school day.
Take a look at the graphic below for built-in opportunities throughout the school year to schedule appointments and family travel.
Thank you for partnering with us to make attendance a priority. Together, we can help every student succeed—because every day counts!

As we are approaching Teacher Appreciation Week many are asking for ideas on how to show appreciation. Attached is a flyer with more information and ideas for you. We would love for anyone who wishes to show appreciation, to send items to the school for us to set up on display for our teachers to grab something that might be a need or want for them.
