We are excited to announce that we will host our annual ULP Literacy Day event during the month of December. We would love to have students from each class participate. Please help your student select a poem and begin practicing now. The rules and judging criteria will be very helpful when helping your child memorize and recite his/her poem. You may want to keep this part of the letter and just return the bottom portion to school. Poetry Recitation Contest Rules: Child must state the title of the poem and the author’s name before beginning to recite the poem. Make sure to practice this way. Feet should be planted firmly on the ground and remain still. Use upper body, head, eyes, arms, and hands for emphasis and motions. Voice and expression are very important. No props or costumes allowed. No prose (speeches, passages from the Bible, or other books). No songs or lyrics. No pieces cut from a longer poem. No longer than five minutes. Judging Criteria Areas: Stage Presence – eye contact and body language Articulation – using a clear voice with good volume Interpretation – emphasizing words and awareness of meaning Difficulty of Piece – vocabulary and length of poem Memory and Accuracy – memorized correctly with no errors Movement of Feet – able to keep feet still

Our students kicked off their first agriculture lesson by exploring the life cycle of a fish! Each child had the chance to observe a fish up close with a magnifying glass and write their observations in their journals. They were amazed to touch a real adult catfish, smell and feel catfish food, and learn how fish breathe underwater. It was a hands-on, exciting start to our journey in agricultural science!

Please read for important information to help with school drop-off tomorrow and Monday.

Most importantly, please be patient and expect traffic. A large percentage of parents choose to walk their children in during the first days of school, which significantly increases traffic.

Parents may park in either of the large parking lots, but please do not block other cars or the moving traffic lanes.

We will be utilizing our Opengate Weapons Detector System each morning, so expect some delays due to the number of parents walking their children in. To help make this process more efficient, we will have two lines and two detector systems.

How can you help speed up this process?

*Consider having only 1–2 adults walk in with the student.

*Ladies: If possible, leave purses in the car. If you bring them in, ensure they do not contain any metal objects.

*Gentlemen: Please leave pocket knives in the vehicle and avoid wearing steel-toed boots for these two days.

*Regardless of carry permits, NO GUNS are allowed on school campus. Please leave these at home.

*Common items that may trigger the detectors include: umbrellas, eyeglass cases, manicure sets, some phones, key fobs, and other metal objects.

*Have any items that may trigger an alert ready to place on the table so the line can move smoothly.

*Walk through the detectors one person at a time, and listen for directions from staff if an alert occurs.

Students do not need to remove binders from their bookbags this year unless the binder is larger than ½ inch. However, the same guidance about metal items applies to students as well.

Building Entry Instructions:

Kindergarten Families: Keep right when entering the building. After clearing the front entrance, follow the red path to the right toward classrooms. Students may stop and grab breakfast or bypass the line if not needed. When exiting, follow the long blue hallway that leads directly to the parking lot.

1st Grade Families: Keep left upon entry. Once you clear the front, follow the green path to the left toward classrooms. Students may stop for breakfast or bypass it. When exiting, use the doors at the end of the 1st grade hallway, which lead directly to the parking lot.

2nd Grade Families: Also keep left when entering. Follow the yellow path to the left toward classrooms. Students may stop for breakfast or bypass it. When exiting, head back toward the front entrance and exit through the doors beside the breakfast cart.

Please follow these instructions, and we know everything will flow smoothly. It’s going to be a great year at ULPS, and we are excited to see everyone tomorrow!

It may be summer, but work continues throughout the T-U School District! This week, district and school leaders met for the annual District Leadership Retreat, held at Upson-Lee Middle School. School personnel reviewed and revised their continuous improvement plans, aligned expectations and goals, and focused on key performance measurements. The annual district retreat is an opportunity to review, reflect, and reimagine teaching and learning initiatives while strengthening the leadership's commitment to success!

Spring is in the air! Babies, babies everywhere! Six turkey eggs hatched in the incubator, six new baby chicks in the coop, and eight baby bunnies were born yesterday afternoon. ULPS agriculture students will be busy on these last days of school tending to our new arrivals!
