Kindergarten What is your child learning this week in Second Step? They are learning they need to use their eyes, ears, and brain when focusing their attention on something. They are learning about a very important tool called an “attent-o-scope”. They use the “attent-o-scope” to help them focus their attention. Get them to show you how to make their special “attent-o-scope”. Why is this important? Being able to focus attention helps children learn. It helps them ignore distractions and focus on what is important in class. Grade 1 What is your child learning this week in Second Step? They are learning that saying things to themselves (self-talk) can help them when they are trying to focus their attention. Why is this important? Being able to focus attention helps children become better learners. Grade 2 What is your child learning this week in Second Step? They are learning about the importance of focusing their attention and listening. When they focus their attention they: 1. Concentrate 2. Use eyes, ears, and brain 3. Ignore distractions When they listen they: 1. Focus on the speaker 2. Wait their turn to speak 3. Remember what they hear 4. Think of questions Why is this important? Listening is a critical skill for learning. Focusing-attention and listening skills can also help students get along with peers.

Agriculture students have been learning all about the life cycle of a frog this week. They observed toads, bullfrogs, and bullfrog tadpoles using a magnifying glass. At the end of the lesson, students participated in a toad race to find out which toad could hop the fastest.

This week our students have started the Second Step curriculum. All students at ULPS start their day with a 20-25 minute lesson. The Second Step program teaches students to have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems. Students with these skills are better able to learn in the classroom, develop relationships, and control their emotions and behaviors. This week the Kindergarten and First Grade students are learning about the importance of listening. They are learning the Listening Rules: Eyes watching, Ears listening, Voices quiet, and Body Still. These skills help your children know how to listen and act in a group so everyone can learn. Second grade students are learning how to be respectful at school. Your students are learning many ways to be respectful such as, taking turns, paying attention, listening to the speaker, and raising their hands. We explain to our students when being respectful your treat people how you want to be treated. Linked is information for parents to use for each grade. Please take a minute to look over the sheets and talk with your child about what they are learning.

This week we have been busy learning what it looks like to be READY, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE at Upson -Lee Primary School. Our students are using the skills they are learning! We have seen lots of Royal Behavior through out the building! We are very proud! #UL #RoyalBehavior #ULPS

Our school year has started with a BANG! This week our students are learning what it means to be READY, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE in the classroom and in the school building. Each and every day our students have an opportunity to make good choices and earn Royal Coins. Teachers and staff are aways on the lookout for Royal behavior. After earning coins students are given the opportunity to spend their coins . They have lots of fun items to choose from!!!

Today in 2nd grade, Mrs. McDaniel and Mrs. Gooden's classes had the chance to solve "Save Fred".  Students worked in groups or pairs to try to put Fred ( a gummy worm) into his life preserver ( a gummy life saver).  Students learned how to work as a team and how to use their voice to communicate their ideas to their group. Students had so much fun solving this STEM activity.  

Thank you ULPS PTO for sponsoring our new indoor recess rooms! We are so happy our students have a fun place to play in the rain, snow or sunshine! Mrs. Morales' class tested it out today!

Mrs. Dawson's and Mrs Marchman’s students completed a getting to know you activity today where they had to ask students questions. They said enjoyed making new friends!

Agriculture students spent the first two days learning about different products that come from goats. They enjoyed feeding and petting Otis and Baby Ruth and washing their hands with soap made from goat milk. Thank you to our local Farm Bureau for providing goat soap!

Welcome to ULPS! On this eve of the first day of school, I wanted to send a few reminders and helpful hints for parents. 1. Please be sure your child has his/her book bag tag placed securely on the book bag. Teachers will ensure it has accurate car/bus numbers on it. 2. Be prepared for long delays in morning drop off and pick up during the first week of school. It moves much quicker once everyone learns the procedures. 3. School begins at 7:50. However, we will not count tardies until Monday. 4. Parents may walk students to class on Thursday and Friday only. Please try not to linger in the classrooms as it makes it harder for students to get settled. 5. Afternoon dismissal takes a lot longer the first few days. Please be patient with us! In order to help this process, please follow these guidelines: *stay in your car and keep the line moving *once your child is placed in your car you can pull over out of the traffic flow to buckle your child if he/she needs assistance *place your car cling in the upper passenger side windshield, be sure it is below any window tint 6. As students enter the building, they will be in the breakfast lines. It takes them time to learn the process of choosing their breakfast options. If your child will not be eating breakfast at school on these first days, you may bypass the line. We encourage students to get breakfast and share with others if they don't want to eat it. 7. We only have water dispensers that fill up water bottles. All students are encouraged to have a water bottle. 8. Always have your parent I.D. on you when at the school. Students will not be released to anyone without proper identification and/or car clings. 9. Please answer your phone tomorrow. We have staff that will be calling around to verify afternoon transportation issues so that we can get every student home quickly and safely. 10. Report any changes in address or phone numbers immediately - especially if you were not able to attend Open House. 11. BREATHE...we promise to take care of your sweet babies! Thank you for trusting us with each one!
